For various reasons, today sustainability is important to bridge the gap between architecture and the environment. This is taking place by diversifying the approach toward sustainability, with different degrees of intensity.

Within challenges of energy crisis and climate change, the architecture around the world started to develop a new approach to quest the demand for sustainability in cities. One of the approaches green façade or green walls. It is not a new approach, however, the method for the building has changed over the years.

The plant-covered roofs and vertical vegetation contains plants that can sustain without excessive care by humans. These plants have high regeneration capacity and it is adapted to change in weather condition.

The green walls are created over aluminum composite panel cladding, to support the growth of saplings, creeper plants, and grassroots. The aluminium composite panel provides support to pocket planters as it is not possible on concrete walls. To clip the pocket planters with nuts and crews, we need a material that is waterproof, damage-proof, and weather-resistant.

Green walls refer to walls covered with plants, also known as living walls. Living walls are popular with Aluminium composite panels. In this, the panels have MS steel frame structure in which thin PVC pipes are installed with the panels to maintain a proper irrigation system. A pocket planter is added above the ACP board or ACP panel. The pipes must be directed to the pocket planters in the panels where seedlings are placed.

Benefit Of Green Façade in Modern Architecture

  1. Regulation of Temperature – Do you know with a green façade you can reduce energy consumption by 20%? Yeah, that’s fascinating. A green façade gives a layer of heat protection, it blocks the heat entering the building and can reduce the temperature by 10 degrees Celcius inside! The lower temperature inside reduces the dependency on electrical appliances, hence decreasing the monthly bills consistently.
  2. Reduces Air Pollution – The climbers that anchor themselves into the walls by twining stems or tendrils help in filtering pollutants from the air. It improves air quality in the cities and maintains a healthy air index quality both outside and inside the building.
  3. Reduction of noise – Living aluminum composite walls reflect sound from hard surfaces of building in densely polluted cities. The insulation of sound in the buildings mainly depends on the growing plants, the type of plants, and the material used for the construction of the façade. ACP panels are also known for soundproofing in buildings, adding this with green walls helps in the reduction of sound penetration inside the structure of the building.
  4. Positive Effect Of Hydrology – The wastage of rainwater in cities has a huge impact on the depletion of groundwater. Vertical gardening help in improving the groundwater levels. The VGS can absorb the evaporating water from the air. Moreover, living walls collect rainwater which plays a crucial role in city rainwater management. In green walls, the installation of a drop-by-drop system is helpful in the complete utilization of gray water, or rainwater for watering plants.
  5. Visually Appealing- Green walls are not only sustainable and environmentally friendly, but they are also visually attractive. The green façade brings admirable and enjoyable beauty. It does not reflect on repetition of the same design, rather each plant grows at its own pace, giving uniqueness to the overall structure. People measure the beauty of the walls with the parameters such as diversity, aesthetics, complexity, size of the plants, design colorfulness, and light.

Green facades do not require extra installations or need to fulfill any structural requirements for installations. In this 21st century, there is a growing tendency toward eco-architecture, which is an amalgamation of various eco-friendly sustainable architectural materials and techniques.

The aluminum composite panel is appropriate material for a green façade as the panels are waterproof and rust-free, it adds to the aesthetic of the building and ensures the building’s structure remains protected with the installation of pocket plants.
